GL HullManager - Condition monitoring for hull

GL HullManager advances our ship management software offering for enhanced maintenance support. It facilitates the complete Hull Integrity process, starting from inspections, via reporting and assessment of the conditions of tanks, cargo holds, coatings etc., and ensures that your ship is well maintained and that your charterers know it. Thickness measurement results recorded by thickness measurement companies using GL Pegasus software can be easily integrated

The Challenges of Ship Maintenance

Increasingly, shipping companies need to prove to charterers, that their ships are maintained to high standards. At the same time they need to reduce maintenance efforts, the cost of repairs, and drydocking / offhire times. All of these processes present many challenges: inspection intensity varies depending on individuals; differences in onboard and onshore information cause problems; assessment of a ship’s condition is left to the interpretation of a single crew member; information documents for the repair yard also leave too much scope for interpretation; comparisons to sister vessels or long-term observations involve a lot of effort; and finally, too much time is spent on 3rd party inspections. However, a well-chosen and effectively implemented hull maintenance strategy not only makes a vessel more attractive to charterers but also reduces maintenance costs and the risk of accidents, whilst at the same time ensuring compliance with regulations.

The Solution You Need

Screenshot - HullManagerGL HullManager is a software and service package for ship owners, managers, and operators. This invaluable maintenance solution focuses on monitoring and assessing the condition of a ship’s hull - e.g. its tanks, cargo holds and coatings - throughout its entire lifecycle, based on information obtained by crew inspections and thickness measurements.

A vessel-specific 3D model is used which enables interactive use, such as specifically marking an individual finding, or adding a photo and descriptions. Interactivity greatly enhances the intuitive usability of the software for crew members and onshore technical inspectors, and reduces the range of possible interpretations of any defects. Thickness measurements are also available in GL HullManager or through the GL Pegasus Viewer, which means you avoid additional efforts to assess thickness measurement.

How You Benefit

  • Identical hull status information onboard and onshore, including a methodology to perform cost-effective inspections
  • Early warning when hull condition deteriorates. This avoids costly repairs and enables crew to carry out maintenance, instead of staging, repairs and off-hire times
  • Up-to-date and consistent information including a complete history of hull condition ready to use for any kind of survey, such as vetting inspections for the charterer or documentation for investors, bankers and potential buyers
  • Detailed knowledge of where and when inspections and repairs have to be performed, thus avoiding surprises while in dry dock
  • Reduction in maintenance efforts, repair costs and dry docking time
  • Fast overview of fleet status / comparison of ships of same series to avoid repeating problems with sister vessels - this allows benchmarking of maintenance performance throughout your fleet
  • Standardised reporting and assessment for internal and external use
  • Support in adopting best practices for Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA) and in fulfilling requirements of ISM 10.1 – 10.4
  • Integration of resulting maintenance job with GL's planned maintenance software (GL ShipManager) - you can integrate hull maintenance work easily into a superintendents workbench

Guidance

Guidance: A Hull Survey Guideline features illustrations highlighting not only the most relevant areas where special attention is needed (hotspots), but also helps to standardise assessments throughout your fleet and thus reduces the level of subjectivity.

Know-how: GL has designed a comprehensive Hull Monitoring seminar. Participants optimise their ability to carry out safe and efficient hull inspections and are shown how to document the results in a suitable manner. In addition, extensive software user training as well as implementation and installation support is offered to crews and office staff to ensure smooth handling of the software and compliance with the inspection processes and policies in place at each company.

Support: Software maintenance & support for the GL HullManager and GL Pegasus Viewer as well as for the 3D computer ship model ensures smooth software usage and regular updates with new features. GL classed vessels participating in the Hull Lifecycle Programme (HLP) benefit from the class notation HLP.
